bacterial; respiratory illness that causes plaque to build over the posterior pharynx- patient suffocates

bacterial toxin; found in the ground, anaerobic; likes to grow deep in wounds; causes permanent muscle contraction and stops breathing
pertussis
bacterial; whooping cough, not lethal in adults but lethal in babies… cough paroxysmal
influenza
viral; flu shot
HepA
viral; liver infection from contaminated water
HepB
viral; liver infection from sharing body fluids– blood and needles, sexually transmitted
measles
viral; infection that causes great damage and has a high death rate from pneumonia
mumps
viral; infection that causes swelling in the neck; can create infertility, esp in males
rubella
viral; minor childhood infection; can damage fetus
polio
viral; attacks nervous system and can cause paralysis
rabies
viral; from bats, dogs, armadillos; once you show symptoms you’re dead
rotavirus
viral; infection that causes massive diarrhea in children
smallpox
viral; causes pneumonia, distinct rash
varicella
viral; chicken pox; mild childhood illness, awful in adults who have never been exposed
yellow fever
viral; causes liver damage
herpes zoster
viral; shingles
immune globulins
sera; proteins that are involved in conferring immunity- NOT a vaccine
RIG
rabies immune globulin; NOT a vaccine- sera from someone elses body who has been vaccinated for rabies or exposed and never got sick
Difference between sera and vaccines
sera is using someone else’s antibodies to fight the infection for you, vaccines make you develop your own antibodies toward the infection
side effects of sera
flu-like symptoms
antitoxins
clear out the toxic results of the body working on the invading toxin
antivenins
works against the actual enzyme process in the poison
