CH.13 Sex
‘But maybe the bedroom is erotic, when women do it for men’
CH.13. Janine shaming
‘Crybaby. Crybaby. Crybaby’ ( Humiliating Janine is a way of distracting of them of the bigger problem, claiming that she is at fault, allows them to forget that it was a mans action that caused this) (Repetition makes it seem like a chant/ mantra)
‘God, do I need a cigarette, says Moira’————-‘Me too’
Clear indication of rebellion being a key personality trait of Moira and Offred. The verb ‘need’ makes it seem its obligation
‘Every month there is a moon, gigantic, round, heavy, an omen. It transmits, pauses, continues on and passes out of sight’
Metaphor for the moon being a reflection of female menstruation
‘I hear the voice, ‘Down’, is it a real voice or a voice inside my own head, out loud?’
Rhetorical question: a show of a distorted mental state, can’t gauge what is real and what’s not. Creating a strong persona of an unreliable narrator.
‘Of all the dreams this is the worst’
The noun ‘dream’ employs a narrative of fiction/ fantasy. Developing that she is an unreliable narrator as this could be all fictional or very fabricated
