Amber-colored urine
suggests concentrated urine; clinical possibilities: dehydration, fever.
Brown/yellow brown/beer brown urine
often bilirubin; foods like fava beans, drugs like chloroquine, nitrofuratoin, and metronidazole
Bright orange urine
Azo-containing drug (e.g., pyridium), vitamin C, foods high in carotene
Red urine
hemoglobin, myoglobin, RBC’s, levodopa/methyldopa
Dark red-brown/coca cola urine
myoglobin
red purple urine
porphyrins
bright yellow urine
high levels of B vitamins
Black urine
melanin, homogentisic acid (tyrosine breakdown pathway)
Olive green to black green urine
phenol poisoning
green urine
pseudomonas infections
Blue urine
blue diaper syndrome (abnormal tyrptophan absorption in the intestine. Tryptophan is converted to indole and final indigo by bacterial action)
ammonia odor
improper storage or handling; could be UTI
Sweet/fruity odor
ketone bodies, DM, starvation, high-fat low-carb diet
Maple Syrup odor
MSUD: pts cannot break down leucine, Ile, valine
Mousy odor
PKU
