symptoms of acute pyelonephritis?
o High fever
o Rigors

best initial investigation?
• Urine Dipstick
o Positive leucocyte and nitrites
when should urine culture be sent?
o To be sent if
o Age>65
o Visible or non-visible haematuria
how to manage an uncomplicated UTI?
• Empirical treatment of TRIMETHOPRIN or NITROFURANTOIN for 3-6 days
alternative antibiotics?
Co-amoxiclav or Cefalexin
how to treat pyelonephritis?
- Hospital admission should be considered
* cephalosporin or quinolone for 10-14 days
complications of UTI?
• Ascending infection can lead to: o Pyelonephritis o Perinephric and intrarenal abscess o Hydronephrosis or pyonephrosis o AKI o Sepsis
