Urinary retention Flashcards
acute urinary retention presentation?
difficulty voiding and a palpable lower abdominal mass (overfilled bladder) .
acute urinary retention can be caused by?
first-generation H1 antihistamines ( ex: diphenhydramine side effects).
first generation H1 antihistamines
ex: diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine, hydroxyzine. also have anticholinergic effects ( ex: muscarinic receptors of the parasympathetic nervous system) which can manifest as dryness of the eyes, dryness of the oral mucosa and respiratory passages, or urinary retention.
acute urinary retention caused by anticholinergic agents?
detrusor muscle contraction and to a lesser extent, impaired internal sphincter relaxation, both of which are controlled by parasympathetic nervous system input from the pelvic splanchnic nerves.
risk factors?
elderly men who have some degree of obstruction due to benign prostatic hyperplasia are at higher risk for urinary retention due to anticholinergic agents.
