City
What does Rural mean?
Countryside or a place where there are fewer people, and their homes and businesses are located far away from one another
What is urbanisation?
The movement of people from the countryside to towns and cities within a country
What is Land Use?
Land Use refers to the type of buildings found in an area e.g. terraced housing, banks, road, park
What are Functions?
Functions are the purpose of the area.
Examples of Functions in urban areas:
- Residential
- Industrial
- Commercial
- Entertainment
- Public buildings
- Open Spaces
- Transport
What is Site?
Site describes the actual land upon which a settlement is built
What is Situation?
Situation describes where the settlement is located in relation to other surrounding features such as other settlements, rivers and communications
What is an EQA?
Environmental Quality Assessment(EQA)
What were early settlers looking for?
-Flat land
- High land for defense
- Materials
- Wood
-Water
What are Dry Point Sites?
Settlements that have been built above teb floodplain to protect them from flooding
What is a Squatter settlement?
Squatter settlements/Shanty towns are settlements where the person living there doesn’t own the land
What are Linear Settlements?
Linear settlements follow a line along a road or river with buildings on either side
What are Nucleated Settlements?
Nucleated Settlements are built around a central point, often a church or crossroads
What are Dispersed Settlements?
Dispersed Settlements are spread out and follow no particular pattern and are mostly found in farming areas.
How are Linear Settlements usually formed?
a transport route, such as a road, river, or canal.Others form due to physical restrictions, such as coastlines, mountains, hills or valleys.
