Catharsis
The release of strong emotions
EX. Letting your frustration out

Sig- Allows us to release emotions that have been building up and to allow others to know how we feel
Cohesion
A union of individual parts into a whole
EX- A group of people coming to an agreement about something and working together

Sig- Shows that people can come together and work as a whole rather than individuals

Vent
To express aggression in a way that does not harm others
EX- explaining your aggression in a rant

Stereotypes
Judgements made on the basis of exaggerated or distorted characteristics about groups of people applied to an individual associated with that group(a set idea)
Ex-Women are supposed to be in the kitchen and men are supposed to be tough and not cry

Sig- Can give people a sense of how they are supposed to act
Discrimination
An action or behaviour that stems from prejudice
EX-If someone is against a certain minority group they may not hire someone from that group

Sig- it could either help someone or put someone down
Racism
Prejudice or discrimination against a person or group because of a difference of race or cultural or ethnic background
EX- not liking blacks because of something they did in the past

Sig- can make the one that is being discriminated more motivated to prove that they are the same
Blatant Prejudice
obvious, unashamed prejudice against someone different from oneself
EX- not allowing a white man into your home because you are afraid they will steal something.

Sig- shows how the world has changed, more people or accepting of others
Deviance
Any act by an individual or group that breaks a social norm EX-Skipping class to study for a test Practioner- NP Sig- allows people to do something that is not normal
Negative Sanctions
Fines, jail terms, demotions, and other penalties used by the courts and large organizations to control behaviour
EX-Jail time for committing a crime

Sig-Shows people that there is a punishment for breaking rules
White Collar Crime
Offences involving financial fraud that tend to be committed by professionals and business people
EX- scams

Sig-Shows that we need to be careful with what we sign up for and who has our information
Psychopath
Unstable or aggressive person
EX-Someone who does not know how to show their emotions

Coercive Organization
Associations that people are forced to join for punishment or treatment
EX-Prison
Practioner-NP
Sig-forces people to have a punishment for their actions so they don’t get away without not having a consequence
Normative Organization
Voluntary organizations that people join as worthwhile causes or personal gratification
EX-Red Cross

Sig-allows people to be part of an organization out of gratitude and don’t expect anything in return. Or allows people to have a hobby that does something
Utilitarian Organization
Organizations that people join for personal rewards, such as for work
EX- any job you get a wage

Sig- allows people to get a reward for doing good and to help them meet society’s life standards
