Unit Four- Brain Flashcards
what is the spinal column
3 layers of elastic tissue covering the spine
what is meninges
elastic tissue that covers the brain
what is the cerebrum
largest part of the brain
what is the cerebellum and what does it control
-walnut shaped
-movement and motor skills
what does the midbrain do
process info from sensory neurons
what is corpus callosum and what do they do
-nerve fibres that connect right and left hemispheres
what is the medulla oblongata and what does it do
-top of brain stem, connects brain with spinal cord
-coordinates automatic functions (breathing, swallowing, heart rate, etc.)
what is the hypothalamus and what does it do
-link between nervous system and endocrine system
-coordinates pituitary gland
-regulates emotion, body temp, heart rate
what is the thalamus and what does it do
-relay station between forebrain and hindbrain
what is the pons and what do they do
relay centre between right and left halves of cerebrum
what is the cerebral cortex and what does it do
-thin outer layer covering grey matter
-receive and integrate sensory info
-responsible for language, memory, personality
what is the blood brain barrier
-layer of glial cells and blood vessels
-separates blood from the CNS
-controls entrance of substances into the brain
