Unit 8 Earth Science (Weathering) Flashcards
`Weathering
the breaking down of rocks on earth’s surface into smaller peices
Erosion
the process of morving sediment from one place to another
Deposition
the dropping or settling of eroded materials
Sediment
sand bits of rocks, fossils, and other matter carried and deposited by water, wind, or ice
Delta
a landform created by the long term depositing of sediment
Landform
a natural land shape or feature
Sand Dune
they form when wind carries and depostites a lot of sand in an area
Causes of Weathering
- Gravity
2.Flowing Water
3.Tree Roots - Chemicals in Rain (Pollution)
- Sand Blowing
- Animals’ Digging
- Ice Wedging
Crust
The thin outer layer of earth, including dry land and th eocean floor
Core
The layer of earth extending form erth’s center to the matel; mostly metalic metal and iron
Mantle
The thick layer of earth beneath the crust
Plate Tectonics
The theory that Earth’s crust is dividedminto plates that are always moving
Fault
A break in earth’s crust where rocks on one side moves in relation to rock on the other side
Earthquake
A shaking of earth’s surface that can cause land to rise and fall
Epicenter
The point on earth’s surface directly above the focus of an earthquake
