unit 7: genetics, populations, evolution & ecosystems Flashcards
genotype
the genetic constitution of an organism
-describes all the alleles that an organism has
phenotype
observable characteristics of an organism
-result of the interaction between the expression of the genotype and the environment
gene
length of dna that codes for a particular polypeptide
locus
position of a gene on a particular dna molecule
allele
version of a gene
dominant allele
only a single allele is required for the characteristic to be expressed in the phenotype
recessive allele
the characteristic is only expressed if there is no dominant allele
codominant alleles
both alleles are expressed equally and contribute to the phenotype, with there either being a blend of the two character us or both characteristics being seen together
pure breeding
homozygous pair of alleles
monohybrid inheritance
when a phenotype or trait is controlled by a single gene
monohybrid inheritance
when a phenotype or trait is controlled by a single gene
