Unit 6 Flashcards
What neurons stimulate muscle cells?
Motor neurons
What nervous system is responsible for muscles?
The somatic nervous system.
What NT is responsible for muscle movement?
Acetylcholine.
What is the local depolarization of muscle tissue called?
An End Plate Potential
What ion is released into muscles from an AP
Ca 2+
Why is there a latent period between the AP and the muscle contraction?
It takes time for the Ca 2+ to act
Destruction of acetylcholine is done by what enzyme?
Acetylcholinesterase
What does acetylcholine break down into?
Acetic Acid and Choline
What makes up a motor unit?
1 neuron + all the muscle fibers it suplies.
What are 2 ways to give smooth and sustained responses of varying strength?
- Change the frequency of stimulation2. Change the number of motor units activated
What is a fused tetanus?
When the inter-twitch relaxation period is too short, and there’s no relaxation between twitches.
What do muscles do in an unfused tetanus?
They quiver
What is the threshold stimulus of a muscle?
The first observable response.
What is the difference between isotonic and isometric contractions?
Isotonic contractions have a change in muscle length. Isometric ones don’t.
What are the 4 ways to maximize work done?
Recruit more muscle fibers, stimulate at a higher frequency, recruit larger muscle fibers, and stretch the muscle to over 100 percent stretch to find the sweet spot of roughly 120 percent.
