Civil Rights Act of 1866
first and primary law guaranteeing equal rights to all U.S. citizens, prohibits discrimination based on race or color
Fair Housing Act of 1968
prevents discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, or national origin, 1974 includes sex and 1988 includes disability and familial status
Discriminatory Housing Practice
act that is unlawful under the fair housing act or other fair housing laws
Familial status
one or more persons younger that 18 being domiciled w/ a parent or other person having legal custody of such individual; the designee of such parent or other person having legal custody through written permission
Steering
channeling home seekers to a particular area to maintain homogeneity of an area
redlining
illegal practice of denying loans or restricting their number for certain areas of a community
protected class
characteristics of people or factors that cannot be targeted for discrimination & harassment
handicap
physical or mental impairment that limits an individuals major life actions

July 26 1990 - eliminates discrimination against individuals w/ disabilities
