Unit 5 Flashcards
Transfer =
safe mov’t of a person from one surface or location to another or from one position to another
Transport =
Moving a client from one area to another typically using a wheelchair or a stretcher
Transfer VS Transport
Transport is usually using tools to help (like w/c and stretchers) whereas transfer you are physically helping Cl.
3 goals of Transferring
(1) maximize function
(2) minimize impairment of Cl.
(3) considered therapeutic
Definition: holding client on transfer belt, physical contact w/ Cl.
Contact Guarding
% Minimal Assist Moderate Maximal Mechanical
Minimal Assist - >75%
Moderate - 50-75%
Maximal -
3 Levels of Dependence
(1) Independent - Cl. performs all aspects of the transfer, including set-up, in a safe manner and w/o assistance. May still need verbal cues
(2) Assisted - Cl. participates actively, requires assistance by one or more ppl
(3) Dependent - Cl. does not participate actively, or only minimally: mechanical lifts required
4 Steps in preparation of Cl.’s transfer
(1) Communicate w. Cl
(2) Obtain consent
(3) Organize environment (Cl., room, yourself)
(4) Back-up plan
5 Body mechanics principles to keep in mind during transfer
(1) position yourself CLOSE to Cl.
(2) keep your head IN LINE w/ your hips
(3) ensure wide BOS
(4) use SHORT LEVER arms
(5) contract your CORE muscles and maintain NEUTRAL spine
What has to happen to ankles and trunk during Sit to Stand? When does the maximum contraction of our quads occur?
feet/ankle: are behind patellae, feet flat
trunk: Forward leaning = hips flexed to advance trunk forward
Max. contraction occurs during “lift off”
If Cl. cannot fully weight bear and has weak quads, which transfer would your PT probably suggest you to use?
Standing step around or Low pivot
Low Pivot
How do you get a Cl. to the edge of the bed in sitting to allow her feet to be flat on the floor?
Hip walking
Ideal way to leave Cl. in a w/c after treatment session (4)
- Cl. buttocks are at the back of chair
- neutral spine
- head midline
- legs+feet appropriately supported
Which transfer would you do if a Cl. does not understand your directions?
Mechanical Lift
5 Major safety issues to consider when transferring?
Level of assistance type of assistance level of dependence amount of assistance type of mov't
