Unit 3 Topic 2 - Gravity and Motion Flashcards
Horizontal and Vertical components of a velocity vector are…
independent of each other.
Define Normal Force
The component of a contact force that is perpendicular to the surface that an object is in contact with.
Describe Forces acting on an Inclined Plane.
- Normal Force - perpendicular to the surface.
- Net Force - overall force acting on the object in the positive or negative direction.
- Gravitational Force - the force perpendicular to the Earth accounting for mass.
Describe Uniform Circular Motion.
Inward net force directed perpendicular to the velocity vector, the object is always changing its direction and undergoing an inward acceleration.
Define Average Speed.
The total distance traveled by the body in total time.
Define Average Period.
The time required for one complete cycle of vibration to pass a given point.
Define Centripetal Acceleration.
The acceleration of a body traversing in a circular path.
Define Centripetal Force.
Force which causes a change in direction of velocity toward the center of the circular motion.
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation
Every particle attracts every other particle in the universe with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers.
