Unit 3 Topic 2 Flashcards
What is the components of respiratory epithelium?
ciliated cells, goblet cells, basal cells, brush cells, small granule cells
Where is the basement membrane?
thick basement membrane is underlying to the respiratory epithelium
Ciliated Cells
contain cilia that sweeps mucus, debris, and pathogens away from the respiratory system as it is swallowed or epectorated
Goblet Cells
secrete mucus that coats and traps pathogens or debris
Basal Cells
stem cells that replace goblet cells and ciliated cells
Brush Cells
gas or fluid exchange
Small Granule Cells
neuroendocrine cells that secrete peptide hormones
What is lined with respiratory epithelium and has olfactory cells that transduce smell?
Nasal Cavity
How does the nasal cavity increase surface area and allow air to be warmed and humidified as it passes through?
Shelved called nasal conchae
Pharynx
functions as an air conduit and in sound production
What contains auditory tube opening that connects middle ear to allow pressure equalization with atmospheric pressure?
nasopharynx
What contains the pharyngeal tonsil?
nasopharynx
What is inferior to uvula and superior to the epiglottis and lined wiith nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium?
oropharynx
What contains palatine tonsils near the opening of the oral cavity?
oropharynx
What contains lingual tonsils on the tongue?
laryngopharynx
