Unit 3 Lesson .01-Gases Flashcards
What are gases considered?
Gases are fluids because they flow like liquids.
What do the molecules that make up gas do?
They collide and create more thermal energy than the molecules of liquids and solids.
How do we store gas?
It must be stored in a container and to make use of it, we compress it under high pressure.
What percentage of the atmosphere is made up of nitrogen?
78% of the atmosphere is made up of nitrogen.
What percentage of the atmosphere is made up of oxygen?
20% of the atmosphere is made up of oxygen.
What is the rest of the atmosphere made up of?
The rest of the atmosphere is made up of argon and other gases.
What is pressure?
Pressure is the force applied to a unit area of a surface.
What is the formula for pressure?
Pressure=Force/Area
What are gas molecules constantly doing?
Gas molecules are in constant motion because of how much energy they have.
Do gases have a shape?
No, gases do not have a definite shape. They take the shape of their container.
How do we find the volume of a gas?
The gas’s volume is the same as the container’s volume.
What happens when we increase the pressure of a gas?
The molecules move around more under high pressure.
What do we use to measure air pressure?
We use barometers.
What happens when we increase altitude?
Pressure decreases.
