Facilities
Places designed or built to serve a special function (ex: hospital, clinic, doctors office)
Diagnostic
Pertaining to the determination of the nature of a disease or injury by examining
Chronic
continuing over many years and for a long time
Geriatric
a branch of medicine that deals with the problems and diseases of old age and aging people
Ambulatory
serving patients who are able to walk
Specialties
fields of study or professional work (ex: pediatrics)
Outpatient
patients/clients who do not require hospitalization but are under physicians care
Immunizations
substances given to make disease organisms harmless to the patient; may be given orally or by injection
General Hospitals
- Facilities where patients are hospitalized for a short time, ranging from a few days to a few weeks
- don’t specialize
- wide range of services
- physicians, nurses. surgeons. support staff
Specialty Hospitals
- provide care for a specific population, disease, or condition
- in and out patient care
- condition typically long lasting and require specialists
- conditions usually chronic
- patients may stay longer than general hospital
Nursing Homes
- places of residence that require constant nursing care
- residents not patients
- mostly geriatrics but also for any age that requires constant care
Assisted Living Facilities
bridges gap between independent living and extended care or nursing homes
Home Health Care Agencies
provide care for patients who need health services but not hospitalization
hospice
end of life care, terminal illness (6 month or less)
outpatient surgery centers
- surgical procedures less invasive
- cost effective due to no overnight care
