Unit 2 Test Flashcards
Amino acid
A molecule that makes up proteins; composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur.
Molecule
Two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds; not necessarily a compound.
Polymer
A large, carbon-based molecule formed from monomers.
Enzyme
A protein that catalyzes chemical reactions for organisms.
Hydrogen bond
The attraction between a slightly positive hydrogen atom and a slightly negative atom.
pH
The measurement of acidity; related to free hydrogen ion concentration in solution.
Product
The substance formed by a chemical reaction.
Element
The substance formed by a chemical reaction.
Adhesion
The attraction of only one type of atom that cannot be broken down by chemical reactions.
Activation energy
The energy input necessary to initiate a chemical reaction.
Substrate
A reactant in a chemical reaction upon which an enzyme acts.
Solution
A mixture that is consistent throughout; also called a homogeneous mixture.
Covalent bond
The chemical bond formed when two atoms share one or more pours of electrons.
Fatty acid
A hydrocarbon chain often bonded to glycerol in a lipid.
Atom
The smallest basic unit of matter.
