Brain drain
the emigration (out-migration) of knowledgeable, well-educated, and skilled professionals from their home country to another country.
Chain migration (migration ladder)
Migration of people to a specific location because relatives or members of the same nationality previously migrated there.
Distance decay
theory that states that as the distance between two places increases, the interaction between those two places decreases (farther apart less communication)
Ethnic enclaves
a high number of people from the same ethnic group within a geographic area, distinct from the people in the areas around them. (Diff socially and economically)
Guest worker
Legal immigrant who has a work visa, usually short term. (foreign national who is permitted to live and work temporarily in a host country.)
Internally displaced person (IDP)
Is a refugee who has not migrated across an international border.

Movement from one region to another

Pull factors
Induces people to move into a new location (attraction)
Push factors
Induces people to move out of their present location (less attractive)
Ravenstein’s laws
“Laws of migration” distinct demographic patterns related to migration changing social, economic, and political roles for females.
Law 1: women more likely move internally within a country and males move more internationally.
Law 2: most migrants are young adults and seeking employment
Law 3: people only move as far as they must, most migrants only move short distances.
Law 4: when migrants move large distances they typically do so in steps “step migrations”
Law 5: migration flow in one direction would produce a counter flow in the opposite direction.
Law 6: rural areas to urban areas for economic reasons
Law 7: migrants who move long distances will go to large urban areas
Law 8: more people will be attracted to large cities even if they are far away.
