Unit 1.1 Paschal Mystery Flashcards
Paschal Mystery
The term the Chuch uses to refer to the death and ressurection of Jesus and their efforts of salvation
The Last Supper
The night before Jesus was crucified he enjoyed a meal with his disiples, sharing bread and wine with them referring to it as his body and blood establishing the Eucharist
The Garden of Gethsemane
After supper, Jesus left the disciples while he left to pray and asked God ‘take this cup from me, yet not my will but yours be done’. When he went back the disciples were asleep. As they awoke, Judas Iscariot arrived with the chief priests to arrest Jesus. The disciples wanted to fight but Jesus wouldn’t let them.
The Trials
Peter followed but denied he knew Jesus when questioned. The Sanhedrin found Jesus guilty of blasphemyfor claiming to be the Christ, the Son of God. He was then taken to Pontius Pilate who found him innocent and offered to release him or the Jewish freedom fighter Barabbas. The crowd chose Barabbas
The Crucifixion
The Gospels agree that Jesus was crucified on Friday, Simon of Cyrene carried the cross, a robber was crucified on either side of him, Jesus was mocked by the bystanders, Jesus forgave his killers and died with the words ‘Father intoyour hands I commend my spirit’
The resurrection and ascension
Joseph of Armimathea was given permission to bury Jesus in his tomb and on Sunday morning Jesus’ women followers came to annoint the body, found the tomb empty and told the disciples. Jesus then appeared to two disciples walking from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. Jesus continued to appear in Jerusalem for 40 days. Then he told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit and was taken up from them into a cloud
Importance of Paschal Mystery events
- The last supper is the basis of the Mass, the most important form of Christian worship
- Christians believe the crucifixion brought forgiveness from sin
Why does the Catholic Church teach that the Paschal Mystery guarantees humanitiy’s salvation from sin?
- Jesus freely offered himself for our salvation
- This offering was symbolised by Jesus breaking the bread and saying ‘this is my body give for you’
- Christ’s ressurection promises ressurection for all who believe
- By his ascension, Jesus Christ precedes believers into Heaven so that believers may live in hope of one day being with him forever
Paschal Mystery sources of wisdom and authority
- Luke’s gospel chapter 22 says that at the Last Supper, Jesus said the bread was his body and the wine was his blood
- Luke’s gospel chapter 23 says that when he was on the cross, Jesus asked God to forgive those crucifying him
- The Catechism teaches that the ressurection gives definite proof of Jesus’ divine authority
- The Catechism teaches that the Paschal Mystery is that by his death, Christ liberates us from sin ; by his ressurection, he opens the way to a new life
FOR ‘ The ressurection was the most important event in the life of Jesus’
- The Ressurection proves that Jesus was the Son of God
- The Ressurection is the basis of Christian belief as St Paul said, ‘If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith’
- The Ressurection of Jesus is the basis of the Christian belief in life after death and the promise that death is not the end
- The Ressurection guarantees eternal life to Christians
AGAINST ‘ The ressurection was the most important event in the life of Jesus’
- The crucifixion is as important becaise it brought the forgiveness of sins without which Christians cannot get to Heaven
- The Sermon on the Mount is as important because it records Jesus’ teacvhings, which Christians need in order to know how to live their lives
- The Incarnation is important because without God becoming flesh in Jesus there could have been no ressurection
- Without the Last Supper there would be no Mass and no Blessed Sacrament
