Unit 1-Test Forces Flashcards
Examples of non-contact forces
gravity, magnetism,
Force
A push or pull that, if unbalanced, can cause a change in objects motion.
Contact force
Forces between two objects that make contact with each other
Non-contact force
Force that operates between two objects when they are not touching each other, e.g. gravitational forces.
Balanced force
Two forces equal in size and opposite in direction. Net force would be 0
Unbalanced force
Two forces that are unequal in strength/size and in different directions. Net force would not be zero
Net force
Effect of all forces acting on an object.
Newton (N)
The unit used to measure a force
Spring balance
Device consisting of a spring and a scale, used to measure forces in the laboratory.
Force diagram
Diagram that identifies the agent and the receiver and shows the strength and direction of the forces involved by using arrows.
Gravity
Force of attraction that objects have on one another due to their masses.
Agent
Object exerting the force; paired with the with a receiver
Receiver
Object experiencing the force paired with an agent
Friction
The force that acts to oppose the motion between two surfaces as they move over each other.
Air resistance/drag
Friction between a moving object and the air it is moving through; also known as drag
