Socialization
Statuses, norms, roles, and values.
Begins at birth.
Taboo
An action that goes against social norms.
Ex. Showing up late to a new job.
Status
Who and what we are in relation to others.
Ex. Daughter, friend, coworker, student.
Significant others
People we are close to and whose opinions we value, usually in our same social circle.
Ex. Treating your mom differently than you would your friends.
Values
A person’s principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life. Determined by yourself.
Ex. Having good grades to make your parents happy.
Achieved status
The status you gain from personal choices.
Ex. Honors student, coworker
Ascribed status
The status you are given at birth.
Ex. Daughter, sibling.
Norm
A given rule or value that people commonly follow.
Ex. Holding the door for someone.
Roles
Developed by the social situations you are subjected to. Varies depending on the situation.
Ex. Peacekeeper and cook at home, adventurer and advice giver with friends
Role conflict
Being in situations that defy your role.
Ex. Building an argument as a “peacekeeper”
Cooley’s theory
We learn to view ourselves as how we think others view us. “Looking-glass self.”
Purpose of the Scientific Method
Using data to prove whether or not your hypothesis is correct.
Theory
Using analyzed data to come to a supported conclusion.
What is the relationship between hypothesis and data/statistics ?
Data is used to prove whether or not what you hypothesize is valid/true.
