LAN
Local Area Network – network over a small geographical area i.e. your home or school
WAN
Wide Area Network – network over a large geographical area i.e. the Internet
What is the Internet?
The internet is a global network of interconnected computers. It provides us with a wide variety of information & communication services which we can access using a variety of devices.
World Wide Web
The World Wide Web is the massive collection of web pages that we access using the Internet.
URL
Is an address for a webpage. Uniform Resource Locator.
Client
The device that you use to access the internet
Router
Most commonly used home gateway device for getting online.
DNS
domain name server, the system that automatically translates internet addresses to the numeric IP addresses that computers use.
Backbone
An Internet backbone refers to one of the principal data routes between large, strategically interconnected networks and core routers on the Internet.
POP
This is a Point of Presence, an access point for an area.
Static IP
An IP address that doesn’t change
NAP
The point from which an Internet service provider (ISP) drops down its lines and establishes a peering arrangement to provide Internet connectivity to customers.
