RATIONAL NUMBER
Any number that can be shown as a ratio/fraction
RECIPROCAL
One of two numbers whose product is 1; also called multiplicative inverse The reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2
INVERSE OPERATION
Operations that undo each other; addition and subtraction or multiplication and division
DIVIDEND
The number to be divided in a division problem; 8/4=2…8 is the dividend
DIVISOR
The number you are dividing by in a division problem; 8/4=2…4 is the divisor
QUOTIENT
The result when one number is divided by another; 8/4=2… 2 is the quotient
ADDEND
A number added to one or more other numbers to form a sum. For example, in the expression 4 + 6 + 7, 4, 6, and 7 are the addends.
SUM
The result of adding two or more numbers.
DIFFERENCE
The result of subtracting two or more numbers.
FACTOR
A number that is multiplied by another number to get a product.
MULTIPLE
The product (answer) of any number and another number is a multiple of that number. 30, 40, and 90 are multiples of 10.
PRODUCT
The result (answer) when two or more numbers are multiplied.
DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY
A property that states, if you multiply a sum (answer of addition) by a number, you will get the same result if you multiply each addend by that number and add the products. 5 x 21 = 5(20 + 1) = (5 x 20) + (5 x 1)
GREATEST COMMON FACTOR (GCF)
The largest common factor of two or more given numbers. The GCF of 27 and 45 is 9.
LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE (LCM)
The smallest number, other than zero, that is a multiple of two or more given numbers. The LCM of 6 and 10 is 30.
