Describe the 1st red scare?
A
- 1905-1917, Russia went through revolution replacing anarchy with communist government in 1917 = Soviet Union
- communism encouraged worldwide revolution by workers over their capitalist masters and so worried capitalist America
- after war, communist party of America ( CPUSA) formed as well as Communist Labour Party ( CLP)
- anarchists who believed in overthrowing the government began distributing leaflets around cities
- 1919 = 3600+ strikes with fear of communist revolution spreading rapidly / like wildfire
- people began accusing each other of communism , ‘ red- hunting’ became common
