what is globalization?
globalization is the process of the world becoming more interconnected and more interdependent
what is economic globalization?
economic links between countries such as the buying and selling of products
what is outsourcing?
one company hiring another company to fulfill certain tasks in production
It is a newer form of economic globalization
International companies called Transnationals will outsource (hire a subcontractor company) to do some of or all of its production
Reduces costs drastically
whats a tnc?
a corporation that operates in two or more countries
whats a consumer?
a person who buys goods or services for personal use
what is social globalization?
refers to the influence the rest of the world has on what we wear, what we watch on television and in the movies, and what kind of music we listen to.
what is the media?
the different ways of delivering mass communication, such as newspapers, radio, and television
what is political globalization?
the process by which political decisions and actions are becoming increasingly international.
NAFTA, UN, etc are some examples
what is environmental globalization?
actions in one part of the world can have a negative impact in other parts of the world. For example, the emitting of carbon and climate change.
what is the universalization of popular culture?
the production by media transnationals of the majority of TV, films, magazines and so on. Essentially the spread of one popular culture around the world. example could be like tik tok dances around the world
what is hybridization?
media and communications technology mix different cultures, creating new identities
what are media transnationals?
a media company that makes movies,programs,music,tv, etc around the world
advantages of media transnationals
They have large financial and human resource branches to create media.
Many people enjoy the media products created by these corporations.
They can use their control of the media to express voices of diverse cultures.
disadvantages of media transnationals
They have too much influence over world culture. If only a few corporations control the news, whose views are represented?
Smaller diverse media cannot compete.
They don’t use their influence to promote diversity.
what is cultural homogenization?
the process by which cultures become more alike in terms of values, attitudes, beliefs, customs, language, and traditions.
