Uncertainties Flashcards
Absolute uncertainty
An uncertainty given with the appropriate unit.
E.g. 6.5V ±0.1V (6.5 ± 0.1) V
Scale reading uncertainty
Uncertainty in a measurement due to the scale used.
= ± 1 of smallest division for digital scales.
= ± 1/2 of smallest division for analogue scales.

Prefixes milli (m)
1x10^-3
micro (μ)
1 x 10-6
Systematic uncertainty
When readings taken are all too large or too small. This can be caused by measurement techniques or experiment design
Percentage Uncertainty
An uncertainty given as a percentage.
E,g. 6.5V ±1.5%
Uncertainty in a final answer
The largest percentage uncertainty out of all the percentage uncertainties

Random uncertainty
The uncertainty that occurs due to variations in repeated measurements.
Max value - min value Random uncertainty = \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ Number of values
