types of data Flashcards
qualitative data?
deals with descriptions, data that’s observed not measured. concerned with attitudes, beliefs and emotions
quantitative data?
deals with numbers, data can be measured, looks at averages and differences between groups
strengths and weakness of quantitative ?
strength = easy to analyse and draw conclusions from
weakness = could lead to data being oversimplified, closed questions could lead to people selecting an answer that is not how they fully represent their feelings, voiding the research as meaningless.
strengths and weakness of qualitative data?
strength = provides detailed information which can provide unexpected insights into thoughts, feelings and behaviours not restricted by closed questions.
weakness = extremely difficult to analyse and draw conclusions from
primary data ?
data collected or observed by the researcher themselves. you design the study yourself and this can range from many methodologies such as interviews and observations.
secondary data ?
data collected for a purpose other than the current one. research collected second hand by somebody else.
strengths and weakness of primary data ?
strengths = researcher has control, can design to fit aim and hypothesis of the study.
weakness = time consuming to design, select participants, conduct study and analysing data which leads to expensive research
strength and weakness of data?
strength = simpler to access someone else’s research, therefore cheaper and less time consuming
weakness = may not be able to find research that is needed
