Q

What does he say in “On Tradition”?

A

T.S. Elliot has a dynamic view of tradition. Not a negative one. It creates a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood. It is constantly changing with the alteration of history. It’s the job of the critic to determine which parts are necessary to be kept.

Q

What does he say in “ Tradition and the individual talent”?

A

Tradition is not a blind
repetition or following of the past it is also not something that is inherent. It is rather something
that you should obtain through labour and hard work.

Q

What does T.S. Elliot mean by “historical sense”

A

To know the whole body of tradition you
should read everything from the beginning up to now
The person who has a knowledge of this tradition has a historical sense. historical sense is
defined to have a recognition of not only the pastness of the past but its presence. This means
that they should understand the relationship that exists between all of them. The relationship
between all parts is reciprocal.

Q

What does Impersonality or depersonalization of the author mean?

A

Appeared in tradition and the individual talent. Just like a scientist who introduces to gases into
a chart, and these gases might coexist for years without any chemical reaction, but as soon as a
platinum blade is added something new is created. In this new thing, it is not possible to find any traces of platinum, and the platinum itself hasn’t
changed at all. The mind of a great poet is like a Catholic we cannot find traces of the poets
ideology and beliefs. He was opposed to the Romantic’s expressing themselves and believed
such poetry is immature.

Q

Unification or association of sensibilit

A

This is discussed in the article called Metaphysical Poets. He believed that metaphysical poets had
essentially appreciation of thoughts, and therefore, they could feel their thoughts and sink their
feelings. They could combine thoughts and feeling. While metaphysical poets had unification of sensibility, the romantic suffered from dissociation
of sensibility. They were not able to balance thought and emotion.
