Soldiersdidn’tfightallthetime.Theyalsohadtobeonguardduty, collect food, water, ammunition, first aid etc and repair the trenches.
Trenches
The trenches were very hot in the summer and a freezing mass of mud in the winter. This led to diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia and dysentery. Spending days on end up to your knees in water also led to
trench foot which was a severe infection which could lead to the foot being amputated.
Cleaning
Keeping clean was impossible and the soldiers were regularly infested with lice and rats
Food
Food was very basic-tinned beef with some bread.
Bacon, cheese and jam were treats but most soldiers were very grateful for the food as they were fed regularly.
