Who was Lord Normanby and what did he do?

A
  • Secretary of state to the colonies
  • Approved the annexation of NZ to Britain.
  • He approved William Hobson as the first lieutenant Governor to NZ.
  • Instructions given to Hobson by Normanby were to gain Maori agreement to give up sovereignty. this included a treaty and agreement for how Europeans could purchase land ‘to gain free and intelligent consent of the natives’.

  • In 1823, as an Anglican priest, he was appointed to head CMS’s mission in New Zealand.
  • He translated the treaty from English to Maori.

  • Became a leading opponent of British rule in New Zealand.
  • Around the British settlement area Hone Heke cut down the flagpole several times to show displeasure at British Government.

  • Created a theory based on social colonization.
  • Theory let people from Britain migrate to NZ.
  • This wasn’t a very well planned theory because there wasn’t enough land. However this was an important part in colonization of New Zealand.

Who was Samuel Marsden and what did he do?

A
  • Chaplain in N.S.W.
  • He had a theory that the key converting Maori to Christianity was teaching them basic skills e.g. Farming, Literacy and industry skills.
  • He had his friendship with Ruatara (Ngapuhi chief) that led to the sir man on Christmas day 1814 in the bay of islands.
  • Marsden also translated the bible into Maori.
