Who was James busby and what did he do?
A
- British resident - consular representative 1833 in NZ.
- Based in Bay of Islands.
- Administrator of British residents.
- Problem was he didn’t have the resources to do his job.
- Persuaded chiefs to sign declaration of independence.

Who was Lord Normanby and what did he do?
A
- Secretary of state to the colonies
- Approved the annexation of NZ to Britain.
- He approved William Hobson as the first lieutenant Governor to NZ.
- Instructions given to Hobson by Normanby were to gain Maori agreement to give up sovereignty. this included a treaty and agreement for how Europeans could purchase land ‘to gain free and intelligent consent of the natives’.

Who was Henry Williams and what did he do?
A
- Royal Navy lieutenant who served in the Napoleonic Wars.
- In 1823, as an Anglican priest, he was appointed to head CMS’s mission in New Zealand.
- He translated the treaty from English to Maori.

Who was Hone Heke and what did he do?
A
- Bay of Islands Nga Puhi chief.
- Voice in favour of the Treaty of Waitangi.
- Became a leading opponent of British rule in New Zealand.
- Around the British settlement area Hone Heke cut down the flagpole several times to show displeasure at British Government.

Who was Will Hobson and what did he do?
A
- First lieutenant governor to NZ.
- He followed Normandy’s instructions to gain consent from Maori to give up sovereignty through the treaty.

Who was Edward Gibbon and what did he do?
A
- Created a theory based on social colonization.
- Theory let people from Britain migrate to NZ.
- This wasn’t a very well planned theory because there wasn’t enough land. However this was an important part in colonization of New Zealand.

Who was Samuel Marsden and what did he do?
A
- Chaplain in N.S.W.
- He had a theory that the key converting Maori to Christianity was teaching them basic skills e.g. Farming, Literacy and industry skills.
- He had his friendship with Ruatara (Ngapuhi chief) that led to the sir man on Christmas day 1814 in the bay of islands.
- Marsden also translated the bible into Maori.

Who was Tamati Waka and what did he do?
A
- He was a high ranking Ngapuhi chief.
- He used his chiefly position to protect and encourage missionaries and traders because he recognized the opportunity trade.
- He signed the declaration of independence.
- His influence was significant in persuading tribes to sign the treaty.
