A. Exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury or sexual violence (in 1 or more ways)
- Direct experience
- Witnessing event to others
- Learning the event happened to close friend/family
- Experience repeated or extreme exposure to aversive details of event.
B. Presence of 1 (or more) intrusive symptoms after event:
- intrusive memories
- distressing dreams
- (flashbacks)/dissociations
- distress from internal/external Triggers.
- physiological reactions to triggers(4).
C. Persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with event.
- Memories/thoughts feelings
- People/places/situations/conversations etc.
D. Negative Alterations in cognitions and mood associated with event. Beginning or worsening after event evidenced by 2 (or more) of the following:
- Inability to remember aspect of event
- negative beliefs about oneself.
- distorted cognitions about cause of event.
- negative emotional state
- diminished interest in activities
- Feelings of detachment
- inability positive emotions.
E. Marked alterations in arousal and reactivity associated with event by two (or more):
- Irritable behavior/outbursts
- Reckless/self-destructive behavior
- Hypervigiliance
- Exaggerated startle response
- Problem concentrating
- Sleep disturbance
F. Duration of Criteria B, C, D, and E is more than 1 month.
G. Clinically significant impairment in functioning
H. Not attributed to substance or other medical condition.
Acute Stress Disorder
A. See PTSD!
B. Presence of nine (or more) of the following symptoms from any of the five categories of intrusion, negative mood, dissociation, avoidance, and arousal.
Intrusion Symptoms
- Recurrent distressing Memories
- Recurrent distressing Dreams
- Flashbacks
- Prolonged distress from external internal cues
Negative Mood
5. Inability for positive emotions
Dissociative Symptoms
- Altered sense of reality
- Inability to remember aspects of event.
Avoidance Symptoms
8. and 9. Efforts to avoid memories/thoughts feelings AND people places things that may trigger.
Arousal Symptoms
- Sleep disturbance
- Irritable behavior/anger
- Hypervigilance
- Problems concentrating
- Exaggerated startle response
C. Duration of disturbances is 3 days to 1 month.
D. Cause clinically significant distress/impairment
E. No substance no medical
Adjustment Disorders
A. Emotional/behavioral symptoms within 3 months of stressor:
B.One or both:
- distress is out of proportion.
- Significant impairment.
C. Criteria for another disorder not met.
D. Not normal bereavement.
E. Does not persist for more than 6 months.
