What is the definition of trauma?
Trauma can be defined as a disease caused by physical injury. Major trauma is that which may cause death or severe disability (Brohi K et al 2009)
What is the epidemiology for trauma?
Trauma is the leading cause of death for people under the age of 45, and is responsible for about 1,300 deaths a year in Scotland. It is also the commonest cause of death in children, and is responsible for more deaths in children and adolescents than all other causes combined (BBC news, 2012). Haemorrhage is the second leading cause of trauma death behind traumatic brain injury (Soreide K et al, 2007). However it is the most likely cause of death in the first 3 hours after injury (Bansal V, et al, 2009
