Q

Give an description of transpiration

A

Water is lost through the stomata by evaporation. This pulls water up from the roots through the xylem and this is called transpiration

Q

What is the importance of transpiration?

A
  • provides water to cells to keep them turgid
  • provides water to cells for photosynthesis
  • transports miner ions to the leaf

Q

What is the importance of translocation?

A
  • moves dissolved sugars made in the leaves during photosynthesis to other parts of the plants
  • this allows for respiration, growth and glucose structure

Q

Explain why temperature affects the rate of transpiration?

A

Higher temperature increases the rate of transpiration….

Because water evaporates faster in higher temperature

Q

Explain why humidity affects the rate of transpiration

A

Lower humidity increases the rate of transpiration….

Because the drier the air, the steeper the concentration gradient of water molecules between the air and leave

Q

Explain why wind speed affects the rate of transpiration

A

More wind increases the rate of transpiration …

Because the wind removes the water vapour quickly, maintaining a steeper concentration gradient

Q

Why does light intensity affect the rate of transpiration?

A

Higher light intensity increases the rate of transpiration…

Because stomata open wider to let more carbon dioxide into the leaf for photosynthesis
