19
Q

how do you write a Kp expression?

A

H2 + I2 –> –< 2HI
Kp = p(HI)2
————-
p(H2) p(I2)

20
Q

what happens to the value of the rate constant k when temperature increases?

A

it increases. for many reactions increasing the temperature by 10C doubles the rate constant

21
Q

what happens to K if the temperature increases when the forward reaction is exothermic?

A

K will decrease, the equilibrium yeild of products will decrease.

22
Q

what happens to K if the temperature increases when the forward reaction is endothermic?

A

the equilibrium constant increases, the equilibrium yeild of products increases.

23
Q

what is the effect on K of increasing the pressure/concentration in a system?

A

K will not change. when the concentration increases the system is no longer in equilibrium. the concentrations change to return the ratio back to the K value. this means the position of equilibrium will change but not the value of Kc or Kp.

24
Q

define the term standard enthalpy change of formation

A

the enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements under standard conditions, with all reactants and products in their standard states.

25
Q

define the term standard enthalpy change of atomisation

A

the enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of gaseous atoms are formed from the element in its standard state under standard conditions

26
Q

define the term first ionisation energy

A

the enthalpy change required to remove one electron from each atom in a mole of gaseous atoms to form a mole of gaseous +1 ions

27
Q

define the term first electron affinity

A

the enthalpy change that takes place when one electron is added to each atom in a mole of gaseous atoms to form gaseous 1- ions

28
Q

define the term enthalpy change of solution

A

the enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of a solute dissolves in a solvent, forming aqueous ions

29
Q

what is the entalpy change of hydration?

A

the enthalpy change that accompanies the dissolving of gaseous ions to form one mole of aqueous ions
