Haymarket affair 1886
A
- A strike at the Mc comick harvest plant in Chicago resulted in violence between police and strikers in which 4 were killed
- This was followed by a protest march where a bomb was thrown. 7 policemen died.
- The trouble was blamed on German immigrants with no evidence 8 arrested and 5 were executed.
- Weakened and divided unions and people were put off from joning unions destroyed reputation of LOL and led some unions to break away and join AFL.

Home stead strike 1892
A
- The homestesd strike of 1892 between ASIS and carnige steel company
- The dispute between homestead steel workers near pennsylvanis later 142 days and ended with a battle between strikers and pinkerton
- There had been violence between 1882 and 1889 but unrest resulted in union growth
- In 1892 it was the company ‘s to lock the union out the plant following failure to reach collective baraging lead to death of Henry frick
- Violence broke out resulting in decline of membership from 24,000 in 1891 to 10,000 in 1894 and 1909

- JFK passed the equal pay act in 1963 which have men and women equal pay.
- The civil rights act 1964 outlawed discrimination based on colour. Religion. Sex or national origin.
- Society act targeted poor people
- Age discrimination act protected those over 40

- Workers gained from merger of the American federation of labor and the Congress of industrial organisations, people with out education did not receive the same rights.

- Right to join unions was firmly established.

1.lead to rise of real Wages and decline of unemployment.
- Workers got better rights due to welfare capitalism which offered things such as health insurance and reduction of work hours in return for no strike policy.
- Thepullman railway companies carrieges the company hired black people who were treated poorly and relied on tips for income.

- National industry recovery act 1933 improved wages and work hours and right to organise trade unions
- Wagner act 1935 made National board of relations which negotiated on behalf of workers
- lead to rise of union members from 3.7 million in 1933 to 9 million by 1938
