fugu/poorly prepared pufferfish
Tetrodotoxin
binds fast VG Na+ channels in cardiac/nerve tissue - prevents depol - nausea, diarrhea, paresthesias, weakness, dizzy, loss of reflexes
Tetrodotoxin MOA (tx is supportive)
consume reef fish- barracuda, snapper, moray eel
Ciguatoxin
opens Na+ channels - depolarizes - S&S confused with cholinergic poisoning (temp dysesthesia)
Ciguatoxin MOA
tx is supportive
consume dark meat fish ie. bonito, mackerel, mahi-mahi, tuna which is stored at warm temps
scombroid poisoning
acute onset burning of mouth, facial flushing, erythema, urticaria, pruritus, HA, anaphylaxis-like rxn
result of bacterial histidine decarboxylase converting histidine to histamine
scombroid MOA
tx supportively w/ anti histamines, epi if needed
