Topography Lab Flashcards
How do you calculate the maximum and minimum relief?
You subtract the lowest low from the highest high for the max relief. Then subtract the highest low from the lowest high for the minimum relief.
What do hachure lines indicate on topo maps?
There is a depression, the elevation goes down.
On topo maps, what does the Rule of V’s indicate?
Wherever a contour crosses a stream/river, the contour bends to form a V (or U shape) whose apex points upstream to higher elevation. That stream/river then runs from the high point (where the apex points) to lower ground.
What are the three varieties of scale?
Bar, representative fraction, and statement of equivalency
What is the formula of gradient and what unit must gradient be in?
Elevation Difference in ft (between the 2 points)
DIVIDED BY
Horizontal Distance in miles (between the 2 points)
The unit is ft/mi
How do you calculate vertical exaggeration?
horizontal scale
DIVIDED BY
vertical scale
