Topic B Networks, Connectivity and Protocols Flashcards
What is a SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
This is used to transmit data from your client to your mail server, it is also used to transmit data between email servers
What is SMTP used for?
When you are wanting to send an email to your client, they must use SMTP to successfully establish a connection with your outgoing mail server
What is POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3d edt)
This is used to download emails from your mail server to your email client , the connection is established between the recipient email client and their email server, after this emails are downloaded
What is the disadvantage of POP3?
Once the email has been downloaded, it will be removed off the server preventing to access it on multiple devices
What is IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
This is an alternative of POP3 for retrieving emails from your mail server although you cannot download the emails instead they are synced between your client and your server, this means any device connected can access and make changes which will update on everyone else’s device
What is VOIP( Voice Over Internet Protocol)
This is a communication method, software’s such as skype use this transferring method to allow users to speak to others online
What is SIP (Session Inhiation Protocol)
This is a signalling protocol that establishes a connection between the sender and receiver, we use this to establish the location of people taking part in the conference
What is RTP (Real Time Protocol)
This works alongside with SIP, while SIP is to establish a connection, RTP will transmit the packets of data
