What is the best before date?
The quality of the food is not as good after that date.
What is the use by date?
The food will go off, so it must be used before that date.
What can a food label provide?
It can provide information which is useful to the consumer.
What year were the food labelling regulations made?
1996.
What items on a food label are required by law?
Manufacturers name and contact details. Name of product. Description of product. Weight. Ingredients. Cooking/heating instructions. Storage instructions and shelf life (use by and best before dates). Place of origin. Allergy information.
What are the items that are not legal requirements?
Illustrations of the product. Price. Nutritional values of the product. Customer guarantee. The batch code and barcode numbers. Opening instructions.
What are compulsory if the food has a special claim give examples.
‘Low in fat’.
‘High in fibre’.
‘Reduced salt’.
Why is food labelling information important?
People who have allergies need to know if the food is safe for them to eat.
Storage, heating and cooking instructions are there for consumers.
To help consumers make an informed choice and make their own decisions whether to buy the product.
