Topic 5 - Digestion Flashcards
What’s the function of the pancreas
Secretes the enzymes (protease, lipase and amylase)
What is the function of the large intestine?
Reabsorbs water
What is digestion?
The breakdown of large insoluble molecules into smaller soluble molecules to be absorbed by the blood
What is the function of the stomach
Breaks down proteins and churns the food
What is visking tubing?
Semi permeable tubing with small holes in it
What are the two functions of bile?
It neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats by breaking down the large fat globules into small fat droplets
What happens in the small intestine?
The small food molecules are absorbed into the blood - absorption
What happens in the large intestine?
Water is reabsorbed
Where in the body is amylase found?
Mouth and small intestine
Where in the body is lipase found?
Small intestine
Where in the body is protease found?
Stomach
What is the enzyme that is released into the salivary gland.
Amylase
What is peristalsis
The involuntary contractions of the gut wall
What function does the mouth have?
Mechanical digestion
Chemical digestion breaks down amylase into glucose
What are the functions of bile?
Neutralises stomach acid
Emulsifies fats
