Topic 4 - Bioenergetics Flashcards
how does photosynthesis produce glucose
Photosynthesis produces glucose using light
equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water —light—> glucose + oxygen
where does photosynthesis take place in the cell
it takes place in the chloroplast
Why do plants need glucose (what are the uses)
respiration - transfers energy from glucose to other substance
Making cellulose - this is for plant walls
making amino acids; glucose + nitrate ions = amino acids
Limiting factors of photosynthesis
light, CO2, and temperature
why do plants need light
Light is the energy, as the light level increases so do the photosynthesis rate. it only goes up to a certain point then it just stays the same.
what does CO2 do to photosynthesis
CO2 is needed for photosynthesis. as the light intensifies so does the rate of photosynthesis. only goes up to a certain point.
why do plants need temperature
The right temperature is needed for photosynthesis. Enzymes need a warm temperature to work. if above 45 degrees then denatured.
what is Respiration
this is the process of transferring energy from the breakdown of the glucose and goes into every cell in the body
what is Metabolism
chemical reactions in an organism
controlled by enzymes
examples of metabolism
lots of small glucose molecules are joined together to make starch
Excess protein is broken down to produce urea that is used for piss
what is Aerobic respiration (who does it, where does it happen)
respiration using oxygen
constantly through plants and animals
happen in mitochondria
Word equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen —-> carbon dioxide + water
what is Anaerobic respiration (when is it used, how useful is it)
This is used when there is not enough oxygen
This is an incomplete breakdown of glucose making lactic acid
anaerobic respiration does not transfer as much energy as aerobic respiration
only for emergencies
Word equation for Anaerobic respiration
Glucose ——> lactic acid
