Topic 2 (Neuropsych.) Flashcards
Identify the 3 main functions of the Nervous System.
receive, process, respond
Draw a diagram showing the different branches of the Nervous System?
Explain the difference between the Somatic and Autonomic Nervous System.
The somatic nervous system consists of nerves that go to the skin and muscles and is involved in conscious activities. The autonomic nervous system consists of nerves that connect the CNS to the visceral organs such as the heart, stomach, and intestines. It mediates unconscious activities.
Explain the branches of the Autonomic Nervous System and their roles:
o Sympathetic Nervous System
o Parasympathetic Nervous System
- Your sympathetic nervous system is best known for its role in responding to dangerous or stressful situations. In these situations, your sympathetic nervous system activates to speed up your heart rate, and deliver more blood to areas of your body that need more oxygen or other responses to help your get out of danger.
- Your parasympathetic nervous system is a network of nerves that relaxes your body after periods of stress or danger. It also helps run life-sustaining processes, like digestion, during times when you feel safe and relaxed.

Explain the purpose of the Meylin Sheath.
This myelin sheath allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells. If myelin is damaged, these impulses slow down.
Explain the key difference between the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
The brain’s left half is primarily responsible for speech and abstract thinking. It also controls the right side of the body. The right side of the brain is responsible for image processing, spatial thinking, and movement in the left side of the body. The left and right sides of the brain connect via nerve fibres.
Label the four lobes of the brain.
frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal
Explain 1 key function of each lobe.
Frontal lobe - It is responsible for cognitive functions such as attention
Parietal lobe - is involved in interpreting pain and touch in the body.
Occipital lobe - visual perception, including colour, form and motion.
Temporal lobe - processing auditory information and with the encoding of memory.
