TOPIC 2: MOVEMENT ACROSS MEMBRANES Flashcards
Diffusion (definition)
the movement of net particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration (passive)
Example of Diffusion in human + plants
human: oxygen diffuses into the blood & carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood in the alveoli
plant: carbon dioxide enters the leaf
Osmosis (definition)
the movement of water molecules from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential, through a partially permeable membrane
Example of Osmosis in humans + plants
Plants: the movement of water from the soil to the root hair cells
Humans: the uptake of water into the blood, in the nephrons (loop of Henle)
Facilitated Diffusion
the movement of particles/substances from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration with the use of a transport protein
Active Transport
the movement of particles from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration, using of energy from aerobic respiration
Example of active transport in human + plant
Human: absorption of glucose in the nephrons
Plant: the uptake of minerals from the soil into the plant
