Topic 2 Cells And Control Flashcards
What does the process of mitosis form?
Two genetically identical cells
What are the stages of mitosis?
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase and Cytokenisis
What happens in interphase?
The DNA replicates (longest phase of the cycle)
What happens in prophase?
The membrane around the nucleus breaks down and the dna in chromosomes condense, becoming more visible.
What happens in metaphase?
The chromosomes and the copies line up along the middle of the cell.
What happens in anaphase?
Chromosomes are pulled to the poles (separate ends) of the cell.
What happens in telophase?
New cell membranes form around the chromosomes at each end of the cell.
What happens in cytokenisis?
The membrane closes and forms two genetically identical daughter cells.
What type of cell are formed by mitosis?
Diploid (23 pairs of chromosomes)
How is DNA arranged in chromosomes?
In a double helix shape.
Put them in order: DNA, chromosomes, gene from smallest to largest.
Gene, DNA, chromosomes.
Which type of tumors are cancerous?
Malignant.
Why are stem cells different?
They haven’t undergone differentiation and are unspecialised.
Where are stem cells found in plants?
In the meristem.
Where are stem cells found in humans?
In most of the body, but in larger quantities in bone marrow.
