Topic 2 Flashcards
Tissue
group of cells with similar structure and related function
Nervous, Muscular, Connective, Epithelial
General Characteristics of Epithelial Tissue
Tightly packed, cells reproduce readily, avascular, polarity, lines the cavities of urinary, reproductive, digestive and respiratory system, good nerve supply, supported by connective tissue
Simple Squamous
single layer, flat disc shaped cells, allows diffusions and filtration, secretes lubricating substances, lining of heart and air sacs of lungs
Simple Cuboidal
single layer, cube like cells, central nucleus, secretion and absorption, found in kidney tubules
Simple Columnar
single layer, tall cells, nucleus lower in cell, microvilli, cila, mucus secreting goblet cells, absorption, digestive tract
Pseaudostratified Columnar
single layer, different heights, some reaching surface, nucleus seen at different levels, cila and goblet cells lines trachea and upper respiratory tract, propulsion of mucus
Stratified Squamous
thick, several layer, base cells cuboidal surface cells squamous( full of keratin),basal cells are active in mitosis, protects, lining of esophagus and trachea
Transitional
thick (stratified), surface cells squamous, base cells cuboidal, stretch, bladder
Gland
one or more cells that make and secrete substances
Endocrine
produces hormones, ductless glands
Exocrine
produces anything but hormones, have ducts that connect to the outside environment
Connective Tissue Characteristics
cells are farther apart, extracellular matrix, vascular or avascular, slower reproduction
composed of: ground substances(insterstial fluid, proteins that are the glue that allow cells to attach to the matrix),proteoglycans-made of proteins and carbs, glycans trap fluid.
fibres- collagen(strength), elastic, and reticular (form of collagen)
cells-fibroblast- make connective tissue, create proteins
Mesenchyme
all connective tissue is formed from this tissue, comes from embryo.
Areolar
gel-like matrix, elastic, collagen wraps/cushions organs inflammation holds tissue build Is what the Lamina propia is made of (mucus membrane)
Adipose
gel-like matrix closely packed fat cells (adipocytes) nucleus pushed to the side reserves food fuel insulates against heat loss supports and protects organs
