Topic 10 Electricty And Circuits Flashcards
What is A.C?
Alternating current
Movement of charge changes direction
The size of p.d constantly changes magnitude
What is D.C?
Direct current
Charge only moves in one direction
The size of p.d stays the same
Electronic devices
What is the mains voltage?
230V
What happens in circuits?
The battery/cell supplies energy to the wires with the current
The wires travel with the current around to the bulb
It then drops of the energy and the bulb gets brighter
If the bulb has to much energy it will explode
What happens in a series circuits?
The potential difference of all the bulbs add up to the total voltage of the battery
Current is the same way around
What happens in a parallel circuit?
The potential difference of all the bulbs is the same as the total voltage of the battery
Current is split between the branches
What is charge?
Charge is a property of a body which experiences a force in an electric field. Charge is measured in coulombs
What is the equation for current?
Current = charge/time
What is an earth wire?
Connects to the metal casing of appliances to prevent electric shocks
What is a fuse?
If too large a current flows the wire becomes hot and breaks the circuit
What is a circuit breaker?
A circuit breaker is an automated switch that will switch off a circuit if too much current flows through a circuit
What is the equation for energy?
Energy= power x time
What’s the equation for power in electrical circuits?
Power= current x p.d
What is the power loss equation?
Power= current(squared) x resistance
What is the equation for resistance?
Resistance= p.d/ current
