TOPIC 1: Classification Of Life Flashcards
What are the 5 characteristics of living organisms?
- organized (consist of cells)
- metabolism
- respond to stimuli
- reproduce
- evolve
Binomal naming system example
Homo (genus) sapien (epithet)
*genus is always capitalized
What are the components of the taxonomic hierarchy
Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
(Dear king phillip came over for good soup)
Name the 3 domain systems
- domain archaea
- domain bacteria
- domain eukarya
What are the main differencted between prokaryotes and eukaryotes
Prokaryotes are single celled and microscopic while eukaryotes have many cells and are visible to the human eye
Differences between domain bacteria and domain archaea
Bacteria
- circular chromosome, cell with peptidoglycen, bacteria like ribosomes, unbrached phospholipids
Domain Archaea
- cell wall has PSEUDO PEPTIDOGLYCEN, eukaryotic like ribosomes, branched phospholipids
What is archae
Bacteria that is metabollically adapted to extreme environtments (stomach acid evironment for example.)
What do eukaryotic organisms have
- Single and multicelled
- Have membrane enclosed organelles
3.Cell wall made with cellulose or chitin - Large cells
What do all cells have
- enclosed in a membrane
- use DNA as genetic material
- have cytosol (aqueous liquid that fills the cell)
- ribosomes
Differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell structure
Euks
- have a nucleus
- linear chromosomes
- membrane bound organelles
- endomembrane system (factory
Prokaryotes
- no nucleus
- circular chromosomes
- no membrane bound organelles
- no endomembrand system
