Topic 1 Flashcards
What is the definition of frequency?
Is the number of waves passing a point each second
What is the frequency measured in?
Hertz (Hz). 1 Hz means 1 wave passing per second
What is the wavelength?
The distance from a point on one wave to the same point on the next wave.
What is the wavelength measured in?
Metres
What is the amplitude?
Maximum distance of a point on the wave from its rest position.
What is the amplitude measured in?
Metres
What is the bottom and top of the wave called?
The top of the wave is the crest and the bottom is the trough.
Wave speed (metres/second, m/s) is
Wave speed= distance/time
M/s
Wave speed is also linked to the wave frequency and wavelength…
Wave speed= frequency x wavelength
M/s= Hz x m
Which astronomer created the geocentric model?
Ptolemy
What is the geocentric model?
Ptolemy created the geocentric model, as he thought the Earth was in the centre of everything, with the sun and planets orbiting around it.
Who created the heliocentric model?
Nicolaus Copernicus
What is the heliocentric model?
Nicolaus Copernicus suggested that the sun is at the centre of the Solar System, and the Earth and other planets orbit around it.
How did Galileo Galilei discover Jupiter’s moons?
He utilised the telescope, and plotted the movements of the fours moons and found they orbited around Jupiter and not the Earth. This helped him to support the heliocentric model.
