tongue Flashcards
1
Q
- what are the papillae of tongue and their respective locations.
- which have taste buds?
- which are associated with salivary glands
A
note:
Body of tongue = anterior 2/3 of tongue
Root of tongue = posterior 1/3 of tongue
their border is demarcated by sulcus terminalis.
ALL PAPILLAE ARE LOCATED ON BODY OF TONGUE
- filiform:
a) dorsal surface of body - fungiform:
a) dorsal surface of body
b) has taste buds - vallate:
a) dorsal surface of body, just anterior to sulcus terminalis
b) has taste buds
c) associated with salivary glands of von ebner - foliate:
a) lateral surface
b) has taste buds
2
Q
where are the openings of the sublingual and submandibular ducts?
A
RECALL BODY AND ROOT OF TONGUE ARE ANT 2/3 AND POST 1/3 RESPECTIVLEY
- sublingual folds are located on the root of the tongue, on the ventral surface.
- submandibular ducts are located at the medial end of the sublingual folds
- sublingual ducts are located all along sublingual fold
3
Q
genioglossus
A
- 1/4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue
- superior genial tubercle (named after) aka mental spine–>fascia of dorsal tongue
- actions 1) bilaterally–>protrusion; 2)unilaterally–>deviation to contralateral side
4
Q
Hyoglossus
A
- 1/4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue
- hyoid bone–>fascia of lateral tongue
- action: 1) retraction + depression of sides
5
Q
styloglossus
A
- 1/4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue
- styloid process –>fascia of lateral tongue
- action: 1) up (i.e. elevation) and back during swallowing + elevation of sides
6
Q
palatoglossus
A
- 1/4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue
- palatal aponeurosis–>fascia of lateral tongue
- action: 1) elevates tongue
7
Q
SOMATIC SENSORY innervation of tongue
A
- Anterior tongue - Lingual nerve (CN5/3)
2. Posterior tongue - CN9
8
Q
SPECIAL SENSORY innervation of tongue
A
- Anterior tongue
a) chorda tympani (CN7, HH on lingual)
b) CN9 - just for vallate tastebuds - Posterior tongue - CN9
9
Q
MOTOR innervation of tongue
A
- All extrinsic and intrinsic muscles, except for palatoglossus (one of the 4 extrinsic muscles) = CN12
- Palatoglossus = pharyngeal plexus (CN9 + CN10 +SNS)
- minor salivary glands of tongue = PNS fibers of chorda tympani (note: chorda tympani has special sensory fibers for taste of anterior tongue + pns for minor salivary glands of tongue)
