tongue Flashcards

1
Q
  1. what are the papillae of tongue and their respective locations.
  2. which have taste buds?
  3. which are associated with salivary glands
A

note:
Body of tongue = anterior 2/3 of tongue
Root of tongue = posterior 1/3 of tongue
their border is demarcated by sulcus terminalis.
ALL PAPILLAE ARE LOCATED ON BODY OF TONGUE

  1. filiform:
    a) dorsal surface of body
  2. fungiform:
    a) dorsal surface of body
    b) has taste buds
  3. vallate:
    a) dorsal surface of body, just anterior to sulcus terminalis
    b) has taste buds
    c) associated with salivary glands of von ebner
  4. foliate:
    a) lateral surface
    b) has taste buds

Q

where are the openings of the sublingual and submandibular ducts?

A

RECALL BODY AND ROOT OF TONGUE ARE ANT 2/3 AND POST 1/3 RESPECTIVLEY

  1. sublingual folds are located on the root of the tongue, on the ventral surface.
  2. submandibular ducts are located at the medial end of the sublingual folds
  3. sublingual ducts are located all along sublingual fold

Q

genioglossus

A
  1. 1/4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue
  2. superior genial tubercle (named after) aka mental spine–>fascia of dorsal tongue
  3. actions 1) bilaterally–>protrusion; 2)unilaterally–>deviation to contralateral side

Q

SPECIAL SENSORY innervation of tongue

A
  1. Anterior tongue

Q

MOTOR innervation of tongue

A
  1. All extrinsic and intrinsic muscles, except for palatoglossus (one of the 4 extrinsic muscles) = CN12
  2. Palatoglossus = pharyngeal plexus (CN9 + CN10 +SNS)
  3. minor salivary glands of tongue = PNS fibers of chorda tympani (note: chorda tympani has special sensory fibers for taste of anterior tongue + pns for minor salivary glands of tongue)
